Memphis-native singer/songwriter, Shelley Fisher, rips the roof off the Santa Monica Playhouse with her bluesy, ballsy, autobiographical one-woman show, The Hebrew Hillbilly - while ripping at the heartstrings of her packed houses.
Fisher has a spectacular voice, worthy of a cabaret performance, along with a charming country drawl. She is the epitome of down home charm meets urban sophisticate.
A rare Southern Gem
Thanks to this talented lady from Memphis, TN - who is a dash of Mae West, and a pinch of Dolly Parton - the stage vibrates with her songs, anecdotes...and Yiddish charm.
She is a radiant performer who, by her warm presentation, gives her audience a feeling that they know her and can empathize with her.
The “Hebrew Hillbilly” is a unique and personal musical and dramatic experience of one womanʼs journey growing up as a Jewess in the South...Memphis Tennessee, to be exact. Shelley Fisher will have you laughing your kishkes off one moment as she describes her version of Jewish Southern Cuisine....(think “Gefilte Gritz”) with lines like, “My house is kosher, but my stomach ainʼt”, and in tears the very next, as we are invited into her roller-coaster world of triumph and disappointment, vulnerability and determination as she pursues her dreams to become the “star” her mother always wanted to be!!!! Shelleyʼs story touches the “neshomah” in all of us because, although the dream may be hers, the emotions belong to all of us who have dared to live life and dream dreams. As a spiritual leader within the Los Angeles jewish community for the past 30 plus years, I feel confidant in recommending “The Hebrew Hillbilly”. I assure you...you will be highly entertained!!!!
When I watch Shelly Fisher on stage, I feel as if I am immediately transported to the world of laughter and tears. I've so enjoyed this journey, which she presents with taste and the greatest level of artistry. Not only does her singing touch your heart, but her songs (many of which she wrote) and her acting is of the top calibre artists. What an evening!
I attended your performance in Santa Monica on Sunday. A tour de force! I was very impressed with your powerful voice, your expressive songs and your charismatic presence on stage.
